Valentine Crayons

We've started to think about Valentine's Day gifts and one of my daughters favorite things to make are crayon hearts.  When my boys were younger, we made these for all of the their friends too.  These are super simple to make and put to good use all of those broken crayons you have around your house!

The first thing you need to do is set your oven between warm and 200 degrees.
The next step is to take your broken crayons (we keep an ice cream bucket of just broken crayons for this and other art projects) and peel the paper off of them.

Then, using a silicone muffin pan, fill the spaces with the broken crayons.  I find that a silicone pan works best because you can turn the holes inside out to pop out the crayon - no chiseling needed!  Fill them to the top but be careful not to overfill - you don't want a melted crayon mess in your oven.  You can even add a little glitter for some extra sparkle.

Place the silicone pan on a cookie sheet and put it in the warm oven.
The crayons will eventually begin to melt.
Remove them from the oven when each has melted to a liquid state.
Let them cool and harden completely before popping them out of the pan.

Tie them in a big package for one or give one to twelve friends.  Make sure to let the recipient(s) know that they are non-edible!  We learned our lesson the hard way with a group of pre-schoolers!
You could do this for many occasions - Halloween, Birthdays, Easter.  I know that Target and Walmart both sell silicone pans for all types of occasions and they clearance them after each holiday.  You can color coordinate the crayons for the season or holiday.  Brown, red, green, orange and yellow leaves; black and orange pumpkins; pastel eggs; red, white and pink hearts.  My daughter is working on peeling more crayons so her friends will be getting a bunch of heart crayons for Valentine's Day!
