After casting off, weave in ends. Block by soaking in cold water over night. In the morning. gently squeeze out excess water and lay cozy flat to dry. I use cookie cooling racks to dry my knitting. The air can then flow on all sides. Once it is completely dry, do a single chain crochet border around the edges. This gives it a nice, finished look. Then, overlap ends and sew together with same color thread. Sew the underside flap and the top flap. This completes the cup cozy. You can add any embellishment - buttons, beads, jewelry pins, ribbons, or like I did.......knit flowers.
Here are the instructions for the little flower I made:
With a size 2 needle and any scrap yarn, cast on 5 stitches. This pattern makes 1 flower petal. I made 5 petals for my flowers.
Row 1: K4, turn, leaving remaining stitches on your needle
Row 2: P3, turn, leaving remaining stitches on your needle
Row 3: K3, turn
Row 4: P3, turn
Row 5: K4
Row 6: P2 together, P1, P2 together
Row 7: K1, K2 together
Pass back stitch over the front stitch and tie off the last stitch. Trim off ends of all but the last petal. For the last petal, trim off the top end but use the bottom end to stitch all of the petals together. Sew beads onto the center of the flower. I used tiny pearlized beads but you could also use crystals or even tiny buttons. Just stitch the flower onto the cup cozy where the cup cozy ends over lap. You could also make multiple flowers for one cup cozy and attach them randomly all over the cup cozy. Use your imagination!
